Route Search

Find the best connection between any two stops in the South Tyrol transit network, with real-time results and flexible filters.

Route search lets you find connections across all transit modes in South Tyrol — trains, buses, cable cars, and the Bolzano tram — in a single search. Results update from the live EFA network, so departure times and delays reflect the current state of the network.

Searching for a connection

1. Open the home screen

   Launch SmartMove. The route search form is at the top of the home screen.

2. Enter your departure stop

   Tap the From field and start typing the name of your starting stop. Autocomplete suggests matching stops as you type, searching both German and Italian stop names simultaneously — for example, typing “Bozen” also surfaces results for “Bolzano”.

3. Enter your destination

   Tap the To field and type your destination. The same bilingual autocomplete applies.

   Tap the swap icon (the two arrows) between the fields to instantly reverse departure and destination.

4. Choose a departure time

   By default, SmartMove searches for connections departing now. To plan a future trip, switch from Now to Custom and pick a date and time using the calendar and time inputs.

5. Apply filters (optional)

   Tap the settings sliders icon to open the preferences panel. Adjust your filters before searching.

6. Tap Search

   SmartMove queries the EFA API and displays available connections sorted by your preference.

Transport mode filters

You can toggle individual transport modes on or off before searching. Only modes you have enabled will appear in results.

Mode	What it covers
Train (Zug)	SAD regional trains and Trenitalia services
Bus	SASA urban buses (Bolzano, Merano) and SAD regional coaches
Cable car (Seilbahn)	Gondola and aerial tramway lines

Walking legs are always included as needed to connect stops.

Search preferences

Open the preferences panel (sliders icon) to control how SmartMove ranks and filters your results.

Sort order

Option	Description
Fastest	Minimises total travel time, including transfers
Least walking	Prefers connections with shorter walking segments
No transfer	Shows only direct connections, no changes required

Accessibility

Toggle Stairs to include or exclude connections that require using stairs. Useful when travelling with luggage or a pram.

Other options

Enable Bike to include legs where you cycle to or from a stop. Enable Long distance to widen the search radius beyond local stops.

Reading connection results

Each result card shows you the key details for a connection at a glance.

• Departure and arrival times — Shown in 24-hour format
• Total duration — How long the full journey takes
• Transfer count — Number of changes required
• Leg strip — A colour-coded bar showing each leg of the journey (train in red, bus in blue/purple, cable car in green, walking in grey)
• Delay indicator — If a vehicle is running late, the delayed time appears in amber or red next to the scheduled time

Delay data comes directly from the live EFA feed. If a service is running on time, no delay indicator is shown.

Tap the heart icon on any result to save it to your liked routes for quick access later.

Route detail view

Tap any connection result to open the full trip breakdown.

The detail view shows:

• Every leg of the journey with departure stop, arrival stop, line number, and direction
• Walking legs with estimated walk time and distance
• Intermediate stops — tap a leg to expand the list of stops in between
• Platform information where available
• Delay on each vehicle leg

Sharing a route

Tap the share icon (top right of the detail view) to generate a short link for the connection. The link uses the format https://smartmove.dev/r/:id and encodes the full itinerary so anyone can open it, even without a SmartMove account.

Share links work on any device and do not require the recipient to be logged in.

Saving and following

From the detail view you can:

• Like the route — saves it to your liked routes list (heart icon)
• Save to Commuter Mode — adds the connection to your commuter shortcuts for one-tap access
• Start following — activates real-time route following on the live map
